Lions Club Sliema
Lions Club Sliema was chartered in 1974 and through the dedication and hard work of its members a number of important projects have been excuted.
One of the first projects of the Club was a drug awareness campaign in collaboration with Caritas. Another major project was the restoration of the medieval frescoes at St. Agatha, which took five years to complete. The Club also supported the restoration of the niches in Sliema.
Many people have benefited from the organs of deceased persons, but very few people are aware that the Organ Donation Campaign was the brainchild of Lions Club Sliema.
The Club also helped to maintain a flat for orphans and children from families with domestic problems.
Through its Art Committee Lions Club Sliema encourages and promotes the arts, and provides young and upcoming artists the opportunity to further develop their talents. Since the last three years the Club has organised the National Peace Poster Concert as part of the Lions International Peace Poster Content. In the 2009 contest the Maltese entry, a poster by Master Jonathan Young, a 12 year old boy from Xaghra, Gozo, was one of the 24 finalists of the International Contest. He received a Certificate of Merit and cash prize of US $ 500.00. Similarly, since 2007 the Club has supported “The Composer Speaker/Debutantes” evening of the Victoria Arts Festival. The Club will continue to support the 2010 Victoria Art Festival.
Lions Club Sliema has started to enhance their co-operation with Maltese NGO’s in the field of health and arts. Two health related NGOS have been invited to enter into an open partnership with the Lions Club Sliema, namely the Breast Care Support Group, Malta and the Gozo Critical Care Unit Foundation (Gozo CCU Foundation).
Both have accepted the invitation and therefore together with the Lions Club Sliema on a reciprocal basis the following activities will be undertaken:
- Support for each others objectives
- Create awareness for the objectives of the partner organisation
- Inform each other about its activities
- Attend functions organised by each other, when applicable, and
- Organise joint events, when suitable
