The Foundation was started in the latter part of 2006 as a result of the current Chairperson, Dame Carmen Bellamy, (a Gozitan married to an Englishman), discovering that, after her husband suffered a major heart attack, the monitors currently in use at the local General Hospital were either non existent or not totally functioning. This situation so shocked her that she created this foundation.
Government expenditure for the current period will not allow any funding for replacement of the monitor system within the Critical Care Unit, which frankly has no reliable monitoring system at present - a very worrying situation. The equipment being over fourteen years old.
The Foundation had a goal of providing 7 new monitors and a central control Unit at the nurse’s station. Very careful planning and approval has been made with the actual team of “users” and hospital administrators. Provision of in-house training is to be provided within the hospital, to a new and acceptable standard from a medical, hospital, government and surgical point of view, taking it forward into the 21st century
Picture shows the presentation of a defibrillator to the A&E Department of the Gozo Hospital. Present were Sharyn Chamberlain, Charles Mifsud, Staff Nurse Catherine Vella, Carmen Bellamy, Dr Livori, Mr Degiorgio and Mrs Joyce Dimech.
